Brazilian Portuguese basics
What does oi mean in Portuguese?
Oi means hello in Brazilian Portuguese. It is the most common, casual greeting you will hear in Brazil, used in person, on the phone and in messages. It is not a question and it does not mean hi in a formal sense. This page explains what oi means, when to use it, and the mistakes English speakers make with it.

The simple answer: oi is hello
Oi is an informal greeting that works any time of day. You say oi when you meet someone, when you answer the phone, or when you start a message. It is neutral and friendly, not slang, and not rude.
Unlike English, Brazilian Portuguese does not have a special morning or afternoon greeting that everyone uses. Oi covers all of that. You can also say olá, which is a little more formal, but oi is what people actually say.
- Oi, tudo bem? Hi, how are you?
- Oi, bom dia! Hi, good morning!
- Oi, tudo bom? Hi, all good?
Oi is Brazilian, not European Portuguese
If you look up oi in a dictionary made for European Portuguese, you may see it marked as informal or even as an interjection used to get attention, like hey. In Brazil, oi is simply the standard casual hello. This is a real difference between the two varieties.
In Portugal, people often say olá or bom dia instead. Using oi in Lisbon is not wrong, but it sounds Brazilian. If you are learning Brazilian Portuguese, oi is exactly what you should learn first.
| Situation | Brazil | Portugal |
|---|---|---|
| Casual hello | Oi | Olá |
| Formal hello | Olá | Olá |
| Phone answer | Oi | Estou |
| Good morning | Bom dia | Bom dia |
How to answer when someone says oi
The natural answer to oi is oi back, often followed by tudo bem? (all good?). You can reply tudo bem, e você? (all good, and you?). This is a friendly exchange, not a deep question about your health.
If you want to be a little more formal, say olá. If you are answering the phone, oi is fine. Do not translate literally as hi in a formal email; use olá or bom dia there.
- Oi! Tudo bem? Hi! All good?
- Tudo bem, e você? All good, and you?
- Oi, tudo bom? Hi, everything good?
Common mistakes English speakers make with oi
The biggest mistake is using oi in a formal situation, like a job interview or a first email to a company. In those cases, use olá or bom dia. Another mistake is pronouncing oi like the English word oil without the l. It is a clean oh-ee sound.
Also, do not confuse oi with oi? as a question. Oi? with a rising intonation can mean sorry? or come again? in Brazilian Portuguese, like when you did not hear something. Context makes it clear.
Other meanings of oi in Brazilian Portuguese
Beyond hello, oi can be used to get someone's attention, like hey. If someone says oi to you from across the room, they want your attention. It can also express surprise, similar to oh in English.
In writing, oi is common in messages and social media. It is not used in formal letters. If you are writing to a Brazilian company, start with olá or bom dia.
Learn oi and the rest of Brazilian Portuguese properly
Oi is just the first step. Brazilian Portuguese has its own pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar that differ from European Portuguese. If you want to speak naturally, learn from a Brazilian teacher who uses real Brazilian usage.
I am Renata, a Brazilian teacher living near Lisbon. I teach Brazilian Portuguese online to English speakers in the evening. I do not teach European Portuguese or prepare students for the CIPLE exam, because that exam tests European Portuguese and marks Brazilian usage wrong. My capacity is small, a few lessons per week.
