Sourcing Platforms Compared

Which platform is best for dropshipping: Alibaba, AliExpress or 1688?

For dropshipping, AliExpress is the easiest to start with because it sells single items to international buyers, while Alibaba is for bulk orders and 1688 is for domestic China prices in Chinese. Your choice depends on order size, language skills and how much control you want over the supply chain.

Who each platform is really for

Alibaba is a business-to-business marketplace. Sellers expect you to be a company or a serious reseller, and most listings show a minimum order quantity (MOQ). It is not designed for one-off purchases. If you want to test a product with a single unit, Alibaba is usually not the right place.

AliExpress is a retail marketplace. Anyone can buy one item and have it shipped internationally. That makes it the default starting point for dropshippers who want to test products without holding stock. 1688 is a domestic Chinese wholesale platform. It is aimed at buyers inside China, so prices are often lower, but you need a way to pay and ship internationally.

  • Alibaba: bulk buyers, resellers, small importers
  • AliExpress: dropshippers, testers, single-unit buyers
  • 1688: Chinese domestic buyers, agents, experienced importers

Price and minimum order quantity (MOQ)

On Alibaba, prices are quoted per unit but often drop as quantity rises. MOQs can be as low as 2 pieces or as high as thousands, depending on the supplier. You usually negotiate directly with the seller. That negotiation is where a language barrier can cost you money.

AliExpress shows a fixed price per item, with shipping calculated at checkout. There is no negotiation and no MOQ. You pay more per unit than on Alibaba or 1688, but you avoid bulk risk. On 1688, prices are in Chinese yuan (CNY) and are often the lowest of the three, but you need a Chinese payment method or an agent to buy for you.

The language each platform really runs in

Alibaba operates in English for international buyers, but many suppliers are more comfortable in Chinese. AliExpress is fully translated into English and other languages for retail buyers. 1688 is almost entirely in Chinese. There is no official English interface for international buyers.

If you cannot read Chinese, 1688 is difficult to use without help. Even on Alibaba, when a supplier writes 起订量 (qǐ dìng liàng) meaning "minimum order quantity", or 打样 (dǎ yàng) meaning "make a sample", you need to understand the reply. That is where live interpreting can save you from a costly mistake.

  • Alibaba: English interface, Chinese suppliers
  • AliExpress: English interface, translated listings
  • 1688: Chinese interface, Chinese suppliers

Payment, shipping and dropshipping fit

AliExpress integrates with many dropshipping tools and offers ePacket or similar shipping. You can forward a single order to your customer. Alibaba is not built for per-order dropshipping. You buy in bulk, receive the goods, and then ship to customers yourself or via a fulfilment service.

1688 requires a Chinese payment method like Alipay, and shipping is usually domestic within China. To dropship from 1688, you almost always need an agent who receives the goods in China and forwards them. That adds cost and complexity. None of these platforms handle customs or quality inspection for you.

How to choose without wasting money

Start with AliExpress if you are testing a product and want to ship one item at a time. Move to Alibaba when you are ready to buy in bulk and negotiate a lower unit price. Consider 1688 only if you have a reliable agent and can handle Chinese-language communication.

If you speak Portuguese or English and your supplier speaks Chinese, the gap is real. I sit in on live calls and read supplier messages to explain what an answer really means. I am not a sourcing agent and I do not inspect factories or clear customs. But I can help you understand the conversation before you commit money.

Common questions

Can I dropship directly from Alibaba?

No, Alibaba is not designed for per-order dropshipping. You buy in bulk and then ship to your customers yourself or through a fulfilment service. Some suppliers offer dropshipping, but it is not the platform's default model.

Is AliExpress good for dropshipping?

Yes, AliExpress is the most common starting point for dropshippers because it sells single items with international shipping. You pay more per unit, but you avoid bulk risk and can test products quickly.

Why is 1688 cheaper than Alibaba?

1688 is a domestic Chinese wholesale platform, so prices are set for buyers inside China and do not include export margins. However, you need a Chinese payment method and usually an agent to ship internationally, which adds cost.

Do I need to speak Chinese to use 1688?

Yes, 1688 is almost entirely in Chinese with no official English interface. You need to read product listings, negotiate with suppliers and arrange payment in Chinese. Without Chinese, you will need a translator or agent.

What does MOQ mean on Alibaba?

MOQ stands for minimum order quantity. It is the smallest number of units a supplier will sell. On Alibaba, MOQs vary widely, from 2 pieces to thousands, and are often negotiable.

Can Renata help me talk to suppliers on these platforms?

Yes, I provide live interpreting and message support between Portuguese- or English-speaking buyers and Chinese suppliers. I do not source, inspect factories or clear customs. My Chinese is HSK 4, solid for everyday business, not legal or sworn translation.
